Artist's
Impression of the 'November' Air-defence Complex
|
|
The
SAM-2098 (reporting name 'November') forms the longest
range element of the Earth Forces air-defence network.
The heavy missiles are mounted on a light armoured
chassis, affording greater mobility than it's IDC/IKA
equivalents. It is also noted for it's comparatively
massive warhead designed to bring down a heavy bomber in
one shot. However, it is far from perfect. It is actually
an unguided torpedo, launched with the aid of two
powerful boosters which jettison soon after blast-off.
The torpedo then maintains a straight ballistic path
calculated to before launch impact with the target.
Whilst this makes for a cheap unit-cost, it has obvious
limitations against manoeuvring targets. What is more,
the booster-launch gives it a poor minimum range
limitation. And it can only hit targets at middle/high
altitude.
The 'November' forms the backbone of Earth Forces
air-defences but has to be supported by Combo-tanks
(Close-in, low-altitude SAM) and the more advanced
SAM-2110 ('Oscar') if a full engagement envelope is to be
achieved.
